Coyote. I Like America and America Likes Me took place in René Block's New York gallery in May 1974: in a room transformed into a cage Joseph Beuys (1921-1986) spent three days and nights with a wild coyote. The silent dialogue emerging from a gesturous interplay between man and animal allegorically revealed the buried possibilities of a dialogue between man and man. Since the early 60s Joseph Beuys staged "actions," ritualistic performances meant to produce the unity of art and life, which Beuys repeatedly proclaimed and sought. Besides his drawings, sculptures, and objects, these actions are the most mysterious, most elusive part of his work. This volume, first published in 1976, is the hitherto only attempt to document a Beuys action in a book. Caroline Tisdall's photographs and her descriptive interpretative essay make Beuys' concepts and his staged symbols visible and comprehensible.

On January 9th, 1974, Joseph Beuys travelled to America for the very first time in his life. His trip was meticulously planned, with an art/performance scheduled in between each airplane, taxi and hotel, at prominent universities and galleries. Each venture in the New World was documented in these photographs. Single shots, sequences and photo-novels were produced, in addition to film stills and the movies Dillinger and The Dead Eyes of London. Beuys himself put together the layout for this book just before he died in October 1985. This unique travel report, which lay unpublished for over 20 years, is now presented in the exact format intended by Beuys.

Felt provides a nonlinear look at the engagement of the postwar avant-garde with Eastern spirituality, a context in which the German artist Joseph Beuys appears as an uneasy shaman. Centered on a highly publicized yet famously inconclusive 1982 meeting between Beuys and the Dalai Lama, arranged by the Dutch artist Louwrien Wijers, Chris Thompson explores the interconnections among Beuys, the Fluxus movement, and Eastern philosophy and spiritual practice.
